Tried logging in a few times and it continually says version incompatible, however my game is up to date so I'm in a bit of a bewilderment.

Don't update your game / turn off automatic updates till someone confirms that the server is updated. Thats the best way so you stay on the same version. Once the server is updated you have an easy time updating as well, while downgrading your client is a bit tricky and for most people not possible.
