Has anyone looked into using TableTop Simulator as an option for playing DND online with friends? I picked it up during the Steam Lunar new year sale and I think it looks like a solid option. I've found a couple of tutorial videos on youtube, but I haven't seen (haven't looked throughly either) videos of people playing. Anyone try it out yet?

I have. Tabletop Simulator is a good physics engine for board games and the like. However, while it adds a physical element to online campaigns, a fact that attracts many players, the program is not DM-friendly. It is slow moving and can result in knocked-over pieces relatively easy if players are not careful. And it's not exactly elegant or easy to use when it comes to editing the board.

The truth of it is that Tabletop Simulator is player-focused. The best things to do on it are board games, not pen and papers requiring large amounts of variability and pieces in play.

If you are interested in online tabletop games, my suggestion would be to use https://roll20.net/ for gaming and http://www.myth-weavers.com/ for character sheet hosting. Your DM will find those two the easiest to use with the most options. The combo still leaves a few gaps, but any online play will. In terms purely of technical use, those two have hosted my most successful campaigns from the DM perspective.

And a happy DM is a better DM. Trust me. :P
