Hello all,

I did a custom build going on 4.5 years ago. It still runs very well and I think I could just upgrade some components to keep up with more modern games and maybe help with streaming. My parts list is here:

I'm running Windows 7 still and am thinking about doing a clean install of Windows 10 if I do the upgrade. Since the original build I have added a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD but nothing else.

I guess my questions is, what could be done if anything to bring this build forward, or would it just be a waste of money to upgrade components? My initial thoughts are upgrade video card and I should be pretty good. Thanks for any input and advice.

The first thing I'm going to suggest is to upgrade to Windows 10 as soon as you can. Windows 7 has, or will shortly, stop getting security updates which will open you up to a large variety of attacks. Secondly I would need to know what your budget is in terms of upgrading. Without a specific budget I cannot recommend any specific components but I can say that your graphics card is dated and should be the first thing to be upgraded. I would also suggest upgrading your CPU as well. Doing so you will probably want to upgrade to either the sixth or seventh generation of Intel processors but doing that also mean you will have to get a new motherboard with the correct socket and you will have to upgrade to DDR4 memory. Other than that I think you are good. I know that's kinda the whole computer there but it is getting dated and you will start to see performance hits with newer titles, if you haven't already.

Yeah that's kinda the Cross roads I'm at. I don't have the money to upgrade the entire system, I'd say my budget is under $500. I wanted to see if a GPU upgrade would be worth it. Right now I feel like the GPU is the weakest component I have. So if I drop a couple hundred in the GPU would it be worth it?

And thank you I appreciate the quick response

You're GPU is definitely the weakest component you have and you should still be able to get a year or two more out of your CPU if you overclock it. At this point in time I would recommend getting a good GTX 1070. With a 1070 you should be able to play whatever game you want at 1080p and if you can get a good stable overclock on your CPU then you should be set for the next couple years. I have included a couple good links to help you with overclocking your CPU if you have not done it before.

Awesome, thanks so much for the recommendation and the clock link. I'm going to give it a try. Any direct links for a GTX you recommend? So many options haha

Thanks for the links, I think I'm leaning towards the evga. Could you explain the difference between the ftw and sc models?
