Take a look on some benchmarks here https://www.pcbenchmarks.net/fastest-laptop.html and some hardware here http://www.logicalincrements.com/ aim for an intel i5 nvidia 1060 and the rest is up to you.

Ok, I know this thread is a tad stale but I really wanted to ask a question about laptops and I wasn't sure if I should start a new thread.

Question - Would anyone recommend using a gaming laptop for gaming or should I stay away from laptops and stick a with desktop PC built for gaming?

Hi there. If you have the choice and enough space I would always recommend using a desktop PC. It is cheaper than a laptop with the same stats, it will not get as hot while playing and you can easily upgrade/change out single components when they are broken or too slow.

If you do not have the space for a complete desktop setup, or if you travel a lot and you would like to take your computer with you, the laptop would be the better choice.
