Monster Hunter and you! An explanation

This thread is about explaining someone what Monster Hunter (MH) is and what mechanics there are.
So what is MH?
Monster Hunter is Dark Souls (combat wise) with Instance based quests.
Why is it like Dark Souls? Weighty combat (you commit to your swing), limited healing items (there is a lot, but a limit to how much you can carry), and hard bosses (Monsters, which you hunt. duh.)
The process of doing a quest is this: you pick one for your quest girl, prepare for the quest, embark, find and fight the monster, carve the monster for parts, and collect payment and rewards at the end.
Carve you say? Can I craft weapons and armor?
Yes. In fact, a lot (if not all) of your gear are upgraded and crafted using monster parts and ore you mine.
You are going to grind out monsters a lot in this game.
So what's in the fun in MH? The hunts themselves. You are either going to like fighting the same monster, mastering the fight to the point you will take no damage and destroy your long time enemy, or you are going to hate the near endless grind of making new armor and weapons dragging out your enjoyment.
So what weapons are in MH? There are 14 weapon types total, each with their own mechanics and nuances.
Great Sword, where you decimate monsters with well timed charged attacks, positioning is key to use this weapon.

Long Sword, albeit a simple weapon, very effective at slicing the monster up with the spirit combo, with each combo completed raises your attack
Sword and Shield, the weapon where you keep on swinging and dodging, and able to use items while wielding it to support your hunt more effectively
Dual Blades, where you slice and dice in demon mode, you stamina draining for a better moveset. Dealing enough damage changes your normal mode into archdemon mode, where you have an even better moveset at your disposal
Hammer, big heavy weapon where you knock monsters out with big heavy swings. Can't cut tails though
Hunting Horn, like hammer, you can knock out monsters, but each swing has a note it plays. Get a string of notes in the right order, you can buff yourself and your friends, even heal them. Don't be a cheerleader with this weapon, as you can do as much damage as much as all the other weapons.
Lance, this one might seem slow and heavy, but is actually very mobile. Equipped with the best shield the game (both lances) you can block attacks more effectively than other weapons. Charge in, counter, and stab stab stab. The rhythm of the lance is simple enough, 3 stabs and side step, repeat. But if you obtain certain skills, this combo is devastating.
Gunlance, lance with a gun. My personal favorite, but complicated to use. You can shell the monster with your shots, use your charge shots, stab with the lance itself, or use the Wyvern's Fire, a big blast that inflicts damage. Should be noted that shelling directly damages the monster.
Switch Axe, Combo spam weapon. The name comes in when you switch from axe mode to sword mode to unleash devastating combos.
Axe and sword mode respectively
Charge Blade, a bigger sword and shield that has an axe mode, you have phials you charge up by attacking the monster in sword mode and unleashing those phials in axe mode.
the modes
Insect Glaive, you use a stick with an kinsect, a bug that collects essence for you. A combo heavy weapon, you collect essences to boost your stats with defense, mobility, and attack. Collect all 3 and you go into a super mode for a limited time, gaining a better moveset.
Bowguns, light and heavy varients, you use seperate ammo types and shoot the monster. Is a lot more complicated than it sounds.
Heavy Bowgun
Bow, you use coatings to do more damage or different types of damage. And it's a bow that fires spear-sized arrows. A tad more simple than the bowgun
I am not done with this thread just yet, so feel free to leave any feedback to help others out and maybe point out better explanations than I just attempted here.
