Welcome new players to RUST.
I am by no means an expert on Rust and there are many more well versed on this than me, If anything is wrong here or you want to add any more please feel free to chip in. I’m writing these at work when I have free time and this is the first part more to come soon.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TLDR
Prepare to die a lot
Get food and cook it
Make yourself a sleeping bag and find a safe place
Make yourself a wooden shelter for protection.
Prepare to die a lot
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your first moments in RUST.

Firstly prepare to die a lot because you will either by a hungry bear, ravenous zombie, bandits, radiation, hunger and your own suicides.

To start with you will want to try and get some food so you don’t starve to death. Your best source of food to start with is going to be Pigs/boars these give nice amounts of raw chicken (around 4 pieces) Yes you heard right RAW CHICKEN, but don’t be alarmed all animals drop it. Once you get the chicken you need to cook it don’t try to east it raw it will make you sick and you will most likely die. To cook chicken you need to make a campfire from the crafting menu hit tab and at the top of the screen hit crafting select campfire and then craft it.

To get wood for the fire just hack at trees or log piles with your stone and you will have enough for your campfire. Place the campfire down by dragging it to you action bar then hit the appropriate number and place the fire down somewhere safe. To cook your chicken press and hold the ‘E’ button and select open, place the raw chicken in the slots named cook to cook the chicken. If you did not light the fire before placing the chicken on just pop back to normal view by pressing TAB again and just use the fire to ignite it. Cooking chicken does not take long around 15- 20 secs. To see if it is cooked hold down E and select open again if the chicken has cooked it will move to the slots above and turn an orange colour drag it to you inventory and you can right click and select eat to eat or move it to your action bar to eat.

Congrats your first hurdle has been beaten.

Your next step is to get a sleeping bag and a nice place to stay.

To get your sleeping bag is a fairly easy step as when you were getting food you will have noticed that those pesky pigs also drop cloth save these up and when you have enough craft a sleeping bag from the crafting menu. You will want to place you sleeping bag in a safe place so you can spawn in a convenient place instead of random locations if you die. Sleeping bags can be picked up again by yourself and moved to another location if needs be. Be warned though that players can also destroy your sleeping bag if they find it so hide it well unless you have a shack or house. The more sleeping bags you have dotted around the better but there is around a 3 min cool down on your sleeping bag so try not to die too quickly.

Now you have your sleeping bag and food it’s getting dark, cold and scary you need shelter. Your first steps into a place to stay can be relatively cheap in resources to make and that is a wooden shack, this can be found in the crafting menu and costs 50 wood. Once made you need some place reasonably safe to put it. But hang on this is not very safe here without a door I hear you say. You can craft a wooden door from the crafting menu for around 30 wood (may need to check this) once made you can put this on your action bar select the action and a door shaped object will appear place this in the doorway (can be fiddly). Once you place a door you’re the only one that can open and close it remember to always shut your door, all those times your parents moaned at you for not closing doors will pay off. Now you have your nice little shack you can place your sleeping bag and a campfire to keep you warm at night.

Ok up to this point you may have died a few times and now getting tired of losing all your stuff every time you die. To combat this you will want to make 1 or 2 small wooden boxes from the crafting menu and place them in you little shack but don’t place these too near the walls. Anything you put in these should be safe unless you get raided or you left your door open. Bigger boxes are available later via research.
