They take speed seriously in Finland. With speeding fines calculated on your income, Finland is home to the most expensive traffic ticket ever issued in the world. It’s Finland’s finest’s only defence against a nation of men and women born to drive fast.
In Finland, as soon you’re old enough to see over the dashboard you can race. Folk racing is where it begins. Folk racing is an inexpensive, amateur form of rallycross. It’s popular in several Scandinavian countries but it was born in Finland, where it’s called Jokamiesluokka.
Jokamiesluokka means ‘Everyone’s Class’, and it’s not just a clever name. Men, women, even kids; licensed or unlicensed. Everyone’s eligible.
Folk racing is not the same as a demolition derby but folk racing cars are battle-scarred paddock bashers, unfit for the road and slowly being put to death in these backwoods coliseums of speed. To dissuade competitors from spending up big on their rides a fixed price of around €1,500 applies to all folk racing cars; if any other racer offers to buy your car, you have to sell it to them.
