Photoshop like software

I can no longer afford a yearly license agreement for Adobe's Photoshop. I need some graphics for my channel on Twitch channel so I am going to need some type of program that is freeware or at least cheaper than Photoshop. Please I need help Cohhilition. While there's not a lot that works at the same level as Photoshop, you can do a pretty decent amount with GIMP. It retains layers and masks and transparency settings, and it's got relatively flexible brush settings, and it's decent with most file types. Best free program I know of.
