It feels like combining the sims with civilization with survival and simcity. A lot of simming.
You can control each of your colonists directly, though you gotta take into account that they need food and rest or they might lose their shit and start shooting everything in sight

Check out the video, plus the description below it explains all the things going on in the game. The AI essentially tries to tell a story and it looks at how well you're doing to decide how "interesting" to make things.
You'll find yourself rooting for your weakened colonists to survive a mental breakdown, or during gunfights hope none of your people die. You'll have them shoot squirrels to improve their gun skill, and use your con-artists with high social skill to trade with passing ships at better rates. You'll design your base layout to give you the advantage against incoming pirate raiders, and ocassionally you'll watch a colonist beat up a rabid squirrel that's going on a rampage.
Sometimes there will be storms that take out your power and you'll struggle to maintain morale in the dark corners of your base and ride the storm out, hoping there is no raider attack before your turrets are back online.
All in all, it's a great story telling experience and I recommend you all check it out as soon as you can!
