The Build of Beardery!

Hey! I have been using my i7-930 Bloomfield + HD 5850 rig for going on 5 years now and have gotten the, "Go Ahead," from the wife to dive in and build something to last me another 5 years. I would be re-using my case, however, the lack of USB 3.0 on the case itself leaves me wanting.

I have put together the following two builds and wanted to get some feedback from others with building experience/knowledge on what I keep double-thinking myself on. That is my overall problem, second guessing and endless searching. You'll notice that they're basically the exact same thing just differ cosmetically. I am fully intending on overclocking all of the things and making whichever is chosen as clean-looking as possible. Going to try my hand at sleeving also.

Please make any recommendations or point out ridiculously poor choices on my part. When spending this much I would rather not have regrets. You're amazing.

The first of the two builds
  • Intel i&-4790K 4.0GHz
  • Corsair H110I GT
  • MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition ATX LGA1150 MOBO
  • G. Skill Ripjaws X 16GB DDR3-1866
  • Crucial MX100 256GB SSD
  • WD Black Series 2TB HD
  • MSI GeForce GTX 970 x2 (Second to be added mid 2015)
  • Thermaltake Core V71 ATX Full Case
  • EVGA 1000W PSU
  • Win 7 Home 64-bit
The prettier of the two builds
  • Intel i&-4790K 4.0GHz
  • Corsair H110I GT
  • MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition ATX LGA1150 MOBO
  • G. Skill Ripjaws X 16GB DDR3-1866
  • Crucial MX100 256GB SSD
  • WD Black Series 2TB HD
  • MSI GeForce GTX 970 x2 (Second to be added mid 2015)
  • Corsair 760T ATX Full Case
  • EVGA 1000W PSU
  • Win 7 Home 64-bit
Thank you in advance,
-Kayvis

If its not a EVGA Supernova G2 i wouldn't run with it , EVGA has have some really shit PSU's in the past , but considering the Supernova is the only one that comes at a 1000w i would assume its the one in the Tier 1 list.

Windows 7 Pro 64Bit or Ultimate is what i'd recommend , you can freely upgrade to Windows 10 when it comes out if you have a legit copy of Windows 7 , but Home is just so ugh.

For SSD i always only use Samsung.

Samsung 850 Evo or Pro is what i would suggest.

The WD drive is fine, so is the MSI GTX970 , just remember their only 3.5Gb ram models, not 4Gb as it says on the box, Nvidia was caught with the misleading not so long ago and there has been drama about it, but if you want the 970 , just demand price off on it, don't pay full price.

I like the G Skill , i have a pair of 2133Mhz my self 4x4 , 1866 is what and what i would say is the minimum speed now a days but i would recommend 2133 from G Skill , they don't cost that much really.

When it comes to Motherboard i only ever use Asus or Gigabyte, simply a preference of mine i guess.

The cooler i would switch out with a Swiftech H220-X , their perform and cool better than any other prebuild kit out there.

And i would stick with the Corsair case, as long as it has room for mounting the radiator in the top.

Callum,

Thank you very much for taking the time to make the above suggestions, really appreciate it. After further research I swapped the Corsair CPU cooler for the Swiftech H240x. I will go the route of demanding price off of the 970, I had also read that some were able to actually receive an upgrade to the 980 in lieu of this marketing debacle, may be something else to look into. Jumping around with some PSU's to try and stay under $2,000.00 but I do not believe that will be possible. Hoping a local place will knock off some of the final cost of the complete build too.

And the the the psu for a Evga g2 850w,if you have the money go with 1000w but 850w will be ok for two gpus + medium overclock.

And btw the 970's are not 3.5gb cards, they have four gigs but the last half gig is really slow, two videos that explains and tests this really well:

The 850w aint future proof though if he ever wanted to switch out GPU's in the comming years , it just dont leave enough room, also if he is going to OC that machine anytime soon, i just wouldn't recommend a 850w since the 2 gpu's plus the rest of his system will land him at around 750-800w consumption , it doesn't leave room for much else.

http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/ge ... iew,4.html here you go add 300 watts for overclocking and you're at 750w(mind you that they are also using a more powerhungry processor for testing). + there is no such thing as futureproofing, we have absolutely no idea whats coming in the future, just look at what nvidia did to power comsumption and heatoutput with the 900 series, who would have thought that we were going to get past 2ghz on a gpu so soon. I understand your point and as i said 1000w would be nice however he doesnt need it.

Edit: They even overclocked the cpu in that test to 4,6ghz

I would say it all depends on the specific 970 model, some of them uses more wattage than plain basic standard 970's who havent been OC'd from X factory from X company.

And even the test says this from your link, and the cards used in that test were reference cards which is basic ones with stock freq, so their bound to use less wattage :)
  • GeForce GTX 970 or 980 in 2-way SLI - On your average system the cards require you to have an 700~800 Watt power supply unit as minimum.
I was away yesterday so sorry for the late reply, when it says as the bare minimum i wouldn't go anything less than 1000w, also to be futureproof :)
