OK, so I looked around and it seems that I am into aesthetic interiors after all. That's why I'm going to replace the silver Crucial SSDs with black Samsungs to install them on top of the PSU shroud. Also, I am now torn between a 4790K and a 6700K build, the price difference being a mere 60 EUR

you missed one part in the 6700k build, the motherboard is a z97 but you need a z170 motherboard and they tend to be a bit more expensive

Thanks as usual, my friend. In fact, I did have the proper Z170 mobo in my build, ldlc probably added the baskets, so you saw everything at once. The one I was going for is the Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 5, which is indeed 30 EUR more than the MSI. Other than that, exactly the same build, obviously.
And as far as the CPU choice is concerned, the 6700K does seem to do slightly better in some benchmarks, and slightly worse in others http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1543?vs=1260 (didn't find a comparison where both were overclocked to 4.8). It seems to be a very slight improvement overall, but the chipset would make it more futureproof in case I wanted to replace the CPU. I guess we know that the Z97 is not going to get anything above the 4790K. That's why I'm slightly tempted to go for the SkyLake one, but you can dissuade me

The thing is that the z97 chipset also supports broadwell but that is older than skylake, the thing is that broadwell only launched 3 months ago but it was supposed to launch like 6-9 months ago and then skylake came and intel just swept broadwell under the rug. When it comes to the z170 chipset i wouldnt say that it is futureproof, sure its more feature rich than the z97 with newer technologies but they havent said anything about supporting future processors like they did with the z97, that was what made z97 so special it could both support haswell,haswell refresh and broadwell. The thing with skylake is that its not briging mindblowing peformance to the table, instead it brings features in terms of motherboards, better temps and slightly higher peformance per clock.
I dont know what happend with the links but the carts mixed and suddenly i had a 4790k without a motherboard and with ddr4 so i dont know what was going on there. Its fun helping you, if you have any more questions just ask away

OK, so I watched a lot of youtube videos on how to do it, even found some with the same MoBo and almost the same case (440, but the only difference to the 450 are the external panels, the case itself is the same). I have just finished putting everything together and before doing the final cable management, I wanted to check if the thing powers up.
Unfortunately, it does not. When I flip the PSU on, the only thing that lights up are the red LEDs on the back of the motherboard and the START button on the motherboard. This didn't worry me, as I didn't remember what should be lit. After pressing the power button, the logo on the cooler flashed for a second cycling through colors and the cooler fans started spinning for a split second. And that was it. No lighting on the case, not the Corsair logo on the CPU cooler and, most worryingly, not the rest of the MoBo. And from youtube and manuals, I know that there are multiple parts that should light up, including LEDs for system components that are supposed to come on during boot and the double-digit LED status display.
So that's that, I am at my wit's end. Preliminary research seems to suggest that there might be something wrong with the PSU. I'd be happy to accept this, if it's just the PSU.
Sorry for being chaotic, I am doing it more or less live right now.
Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

OK, panic over, we are in BIOS setup. Had to unplug everything from the PSU and plug it back in after establishing that it worked. We are live!

Everything is up and running, built to the specs provided by you, h3ll0j3ll0. Well, with one exception, which was a boo boo on my part - I ordered DDR4s instead off DDR3s by mistake. I reused the 8GB I had in my old PC for now and am in the process of replacing the wrong purchase.
Other than that, I fired up ARK yesterday, and it runs at 50fps on epic. So thanks again for all your advice, man!

I have to order new DDRs now, and am slightly confused as to whether what I can use is actually limited to the stuff officially supported according to ASUS (http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA ... _QVL.pdf)? You originally recommended http://www.ldlc.be/fiche/PB00134230.html, but because of my mistake I now have over 139 EUR store credit with ldlc, so I was wondering if maybe these were better: http://www.ldlc.be/fiche/PB00134995.html

the thing with ram is that almost every configuration works(unless you are going servergrade stuff but thats another discusssion), the asus officially list is a list of ram they have tested in house and confirmed to work with x motherboard, as i said compatibility was mostly and issue of the past and its really important when talking about server hardware but you are using consumer grade so it should be np. When it comes to ram i would buy something you like aesthetically(red for this build for an example) and then go with that(aslong as its ddr3 and atleast 1600 mhz). And btw ram speed doesnt matter much for gaming beyond 1866mhz just so you know
