I was put off by Witcher 1 when I first started playing it.... The combat feels clunky and, though the game plays great for a 2002 title, it is nothing compared to today's standards. Once I found a good combination of mods, however, I got completely immersed into the game. The combat is much better (with FCR) and I actually found it to be much more engaging than, say, an Arkham style. But let's be honest, that's not why we want to play a Witcher game. We want the moral dilemmas, the decisions, the ability to explore, the dialogue, the loot, the background information; we want to take a step into Geralt's life.

I followed this mod guide online:
http://www.gamingboulevard.com/2015/05/ ... d-edition/

This combo of mods did wonders, the game looks great. Although it still shows it's age in some aspects, I found nothing that detracted from my overall enjoyment. The author of the guide includes a file that you can download to get ALL of the mods described in the guide, all you have to do is drag and drop to the appropriate folder.
[The author states that the folder only contains texture mods, but this is not true. As far as I can tell it has every single mod that is described in the guide.]

As Cohh has suggested many times, play the game with the mouse (an option will ask if you want to use Mouse or Mouse & Keyboard) and play with Over-The-Shoulder camera (both of these options can be changed anytime in the settings) to get the best experience.

I also encountered a peculiar bug after installing all these mods: lights were visible through walls/the ground - this was VERY annoying. If you encounter this, simply open your NVIDIA control panel, go to Manage 3D settings, go to program settings, find theWitcher.exe and change the SLI option to "Force Alternate Frame Rendering 2"

And there ya go. The Witcher 1, while not the masterpiece that is the Witcher 3, should now be a very enjoyable, immersive experience.

Hope this helps!
Cheers

thanks for this!!! ive tried to play it a couple times, since i started with the second then played 15-20 hours of witcher 3, and then stopped because i wanted to experience 1-3 the way it was intended, but going back to the first just wasn't enjoyable, it showed its age a bit, and like you said the clunky combat. Thanks for posting this def will give it a go!

I gave the game a go and was really put off by the combat, I progressed to Witcher 2 immediately, beat that and now on 3. Once I'm finished 3, I'll head back to playing 1 using the mod guide you posted. Thanks & Rock on dude!

Like I said, it still shows it's age! It's just 50 now, instead of 80. But I did the same thing you did, I wanted to get the 1 to 3 experience; but I just couldn't get into the Witcher 1 till I found this mod guide (I normally don't like modding but this guide made it quite easy). Give the combat a chance I don't think it'll disappoint you if you're playing the game more for the story and characters!

Happy gaming!

It might be tough going from 3 to 1 but it'll be fun if you want more of the Witcher. Really give the combat a chance though, I hated it initially. Then I found myself kind of impartial to it, and by the time I was out of Kaer Morhen I actually liked it. It's not great by today's standard but I don't find it getting in the way of the overall experience one bit.

I hope you enjoy it!

Thanks a lot mikey2fists! I'm playing the Witcher 3 now but I'm really interested in part 1 and 2 as well. Probably going to buy them during the steam holiday sale together with the Witcher 3 Season Pass :) But first I have to finish this one, only 20 hours into it, which is nothing for a Witcher game.

Long story short, I got sucked into Warcraft 3 then WoW, and played those almost exclusively for 14 or so years. I started putting together a list of games/series that I had missed out on over that period to "catch up".

Witcher 1 to start off I feel, was awful. Clunky, confusing, non-intuitive. For the "enhanced edition" it felt extremely beta/early access. I was streaming my blind play-through and a lot of viewers requested I stop. They didn't enjoy the game when they played it, and wren't enjoying watching someone stream it. They heavily advised me to skip to Witcher 2.

I'd like to continue the playthrough (even off stream) though, before sinking more time into it - does it get better when its modded out?

I've been playing the steam version of Witcher 1 enhanced edition and have run into a game breaking bug. I load my save file and my character is dead on the ground and I can't click anything. I found a work around online where I use a trainer to change my health on the save file so it loads, however whenever the game goes to a loading screen it happens again. If the game autosaves I can fix it once again but I got to the cutscene for act 3 and after it ends it never autosaves so I don't have a save file to fix.

If anyone else has had this bug and found a solution please let me know! I really want to continue the game and don't want to start over because I've spent a lot of time on it already and I'm worried it would just happen again anyway.

Thanks so much!

In general regardless of where you get Witcher from, it's clunky and buggy.
