I don't play any MMOs right now, but if you go to steam and search for Free to play MMO it will list a crap load. I guess EverQuest II is now free to play. I know Cohh is a HUGE fan of the EQ 1, not sure about 2.

Its not free to play but is buy to play and if you like occult themed MMOs (not many out there) then The Secret World might interest you. The base game is inexpensive ($29.99 on Steam and will go on sale fairly often). I put in over 300 hours into the game and will likely go back sometime soon as there is a ton of content I have yet to experience (haven't played for a while) and they have put out a TON of updates and content packs. The base game was created by Ragnar Tornquist (The Longest Journey Series) who is one of my favorite writers and game developers. It has a strong European player base and a decent US player base. It also spawned the Black Watchmen ARG which is really cool too if you like ARGs (not a lot of those around...)

I absolutely agree with ShivaNata. The Secret World is a great choice and it's buy-to-play. It's got a huge amount of flexibility and a highly interesting setting and plot few other MMOs even attempt to touch on. The amount of character choice is one of my favorite things.
For a monthly payment MMO, I'd still vet Final Fantasy XIV over most others. It's pretty much solid in every department and it knocks it out of the park in particular with its world-building and its crafting system.
And as for free-to-play, if you're looking for an MMO RPG, then you're going to have a really rough time finding one. All of them have at least one glaring flaw or another in their design. My personal pick would be TERA due to its more active combat system. Dungeons and Dragons Online is also a good choice if you're familiar with the system thanks to the flexibility of its character builds.
