This is just a few weapons in Destiny 2 to keep your eyes out for, as they're pretty solid weapons with good perks. None of the weapons I'm going to list are Exotics, since those are generally powerful anyway.

Kinetic (Primary):
Better Devils - Probably one the the best hand cannons in the game. Good range, good stability and explosive rounds which is always a strong perk since it helps negate a bit of the dmg falloff from range. Obtained from Crucible (PVP) engrams.

Nameless Midnight - Pretty much the go-to scout rifle for most activities (next to MIDA). Again, it has solid range, stability and as with Better Devils, explosive rounds. Get it from Vanguard (Strike) engrams

Origin Story - One of the best, if not THE best auto rifle in the game. Gotten from Vanguard (Strike) engrams.

Scathelocke - Another very strong auto rifle. The High Caliber Rounds perk increases flinch (screen shake) for opponents it hits so in PVE it can stunlock a lot of enemies and in PVP it can throw off your opponents aim enough to give you the edge in 1v1 gunfights. Obtained from pretty much any engram since it's in the general loot pool

Energy (Secondary):
Uriel's Gift - Like Scathelocke, this one has hi-cal rounds but it also has a perk that give you a very short burst of accuracy when you first start firing, making it more accurate at it's max range which in PVP is a very big advantage.

The Number - Same as Uriel's Gift, except w/o the perk that gives a short boost to accuracy. However, this AR has solid accuracy on it's own making it equal to Uriel's even w/o that perk. This is a Faction (Future War Cult) weapon and can only be obtained by pledging to them during a Faction Rally event and earning it from FWC engrams. (NOTE: this only applies to the first Faction Rally event from before the PC launch. The upcoming one (Nov. 7th 2017) will not have this in the loot pool. However, if your lucky you *might* get it from a Cayde Stash, but that may change so there is no guarantee)

Manannan SR4
- A scout rifle with Explosive round, much like the Nameless Midnight. Being in the Energy slot means you can have a 2nd weapon with explosive rounds if that's your thing. It's base stats are solid and it's got very little recoil. Gotten from Gunsmith engrams mostly.

Tango 45 - A scout with Triple Tap, so quickly landing 3 precision hits in a row will return 1 round from the reserves into the magazine instantly. Good for people who like to get headshots as it extends your DPS by a little due to letting you get off more shots before needing to reload. Found in Gunsmith packages.

Tone Patrol - Another scout rifle, but this time with Dragonfly, a perk that makes enemies explode in a small elemental AOE when you kill them with a precision hit. Dragonfly isn't as powerful as it's Destiny 1 predecessor, Firefly, but it's still great for grouped up trash mobs. Again, found in Gunsmith engrams.

Last Hope
- The only sidearm on this list, mostly because sidearms are kind of meh. This one, with it's 3-round burst fire mode and Zen Moment perk (hits on a target increase stability temporarily) make it formidable in PVP for close range engagements. Found in Gunsmith engrams yet again.

Power (Heavy):
Play of the Game - A nade launcher and one of the best in the game IMO. It's grenades have better proximity detection so they're a bit more likely to hit someone even if you don't get too close to them, so this makes a great weapons for PVP and PVE alike. This is a Crucible weapon, obtained from Crucible engrams.

Main Ingredient - IMO, outside Merciless, this is the best fusion rifle in the game. Quick charge time, good range, solid DPS and just generally an all around solid weapon. Found in Vanguard engrams.

Curtain Call
- A rocket launcher with Cluster Bombs, so not only does the initial rocket explode on impact, but it then splits into tons of smaller grenades that deal additional AOE damage. Good for bosses and trash mob control alike. Found in Vanguard engrams.

Hawthorne's Field-Forges Shotgun - IMO, the best shotty in the game. 7-round magazine, low recoil and full auto fire with a fast reload speed. If you like getting up close and personal to kill things, this is the weapon for you. Found in pretty much any engram as it's a general loot pool item IIRC.

Bear in mind this is in no way a complete list, as I've left out weapons from the raid, Trails of the Nine and Iron Banner as well as Exotics. This is just a starting point of what to look out for if you plan on playing Destiny 2 and want to get what are considered to be the top tier weapons.

So, happy hunting.

Okay, time for Round 2. This time, Exotic Weapons.

I left out exotics in the first list because, while they're generally powerful, the fact that you can only use one at a time makes using them somewhat iffy. As before, I'm not going to list everything, since there are currently 20 in the game and some are just plain useless. I'm also going to leave out the 4 you get from quests because those are ones everyone can easily get.

Sunshot - A seriously powerful hand cannon. It has explosive rounds and any enemy killed by it explodes dealing AOE to surrounding enemies. This thing hits hard and has extremely good stats, the downside is it only has an 8 round magazine. In PVP this weapons is sub par, but it's fast Handling speed means you can swap to it quick in case someone gets in close. If you tried the Hunter in the Beta, you've seen this gun before. You can get this as a reward for playing the story missions, which is great.

Vigilance Wing - A 5-round burst pulse rifle. The only one in the game, this one has solid stability but the perks lend this weapon more towards PVP than PVE, as it's main perk gives you a short boost to your health regen and movement speed when an ally (teammate) dies relatively close to you.

Merciless - One of the the best fusion rifles in terms of DPS because it's main perks causes the charge rate to go down for each shot you make that *doesn't* kill something. For bosses this can mean serious damage on target even if only a few of the bolts land (Fusions fire like shotguns with 'pellet' spread).

Wardcliff Coil - Shorter range than pretty much every other rocker launcher in the game, BUT, in return this thing launches many smaller seeking rockets per shot. Good for both boss DPS and add control, but it's better for add control as, again, the lock on range is shorter than you might expect, so it's a weapon that's meant to be used in closer ranges (provided you don't blow yourself up).

Tractor Cannon - This isn't really a useful weapon, but it is fun as hell. It deals next to no damage, but each shot pushes the target back, so if you can bounce them off walls, you can kill most red bar enemies in 1-2 shots. In PVP this is mostly a trolling weapons since it's only useful for pushing opponents off the map. But again, it's not a weapons designed to be a boss killer, it's just a silly weapon meant for you to have fun with from time to time.

Skybuner's Oath - Basically a retooled Cabal weapon, this scout rifle's main advantage is that it's shots do extra damage to Cabal and go through Phalanx shields. It's a full auto scout and ADSing causes the weapon to fire slower, but deal more damage.

As I said already, using these is a bit iffy. Yes, they can be strong, but they're not so strong that you can't outplay them with standard Legendary weapons. The advantages they give is that they all do a little something extra in comparison to Legendaries.

-----

So, going back over my initial list, I realized I left off some weapons, largely because I never used them myself. So here are a few more weapons to look for...

Lincoln Green - One of the fastest firing pulse rifles, this weapon has manageable recoil and a large pool of reserve ammo thanks to it's main perk. While I'm not huge on pulse rifles anymore, this is a very solid gun for pretty much anything, even PVP.

Antipode-D - The only SMG worth using, really. It's the lowest ROF type, but it's got much more controllable recoil and hits a bit harder than the others. Sadly, it's still an SMG so it's got crap max range and it still burns through it's mag like it's higher ROF brothers.

Morrigan-D - Another rocker launcher, this time with tracking rounds. Just ADS on a target, wait till you hear the tone and fire. Should the target move, the round will adjust mid-flight to hit what you aimed at. Round tracking isn't perfect, but if you like launchers and hate missing shots, this ones for you.

All of these should be in the general loot pool so you can get them from practically any engram.

Time for Raid weapons! Why? Because Cohh's gonna do the raid, why else?
I'm just gonna run through them all because, honestly, outside a few, their all generally worth getting as they can be decent. Some are naturally better, but that's a given with Destiny's weapons in general.

Inaugural Address - The raid pulse rifle, and a really solid one at that. It's recoil is pretty average for pulses and the combination of Outlaw (precision kills increase reload speed) and Kill Clip (reloading on a kill give a period of bonus damage) can be pretty solid since if you aim right, you can hit a few body shots, land the final crit finisher, reload and just go to town on trash mobs for a few seconds.

Alone As A God - The raid sniper. I don't yet have this one so I can't speak to performance outside it's listed stats. With Triple Tap and Snapshot, this seems like it's trying to balance PVE and PVP usability. In general it looks OK stat-wise.

Sins of the Past - This. This is the rocket launcher you want. Not even joking, it's like Curtain Call only better in every possible way. It's stats are just superior and it's Auto-Loading Holster perk lets you fire a rocket, swap to something else and in a few seconds your launcher is reloaded and you can swap back to fire another round.

Conspirator - The raid scout, and it's full auto. It's OK, but full auto fire and the Dragonfly perk don't really mix well since this weapon suffers from pretty decent recoil. meaning you're rarely gonna land repeated headshots unless your really good at controlling said recoil.

Mob Justice - The raid SMG.... and that's about it. It's an SMG. It performs like and SMG, with all the faults of the class. It's saving grace is it's perk that give you better target acquisition and movement speed while moving and ADSing. Aside from that, while it's usable, there are better options.

It Stared Back - The raid sword. Cohh already has this and honestly, it's the best sword in the game, since it's perks allow you to almost infinity uppercut so long as you land the hit, because it counts as 3 strikes and landing it restores ammo to the weapon. So broken, but oh soooooo good.

Midnight Coup - The raid hand cannon. Again, I don't have this one so I'll just be going off it's listed stats instead of personal experience. While not in the favored archtype for HCs, this weapons combo of Rampage and Outlaw seem like a solid combo. Land a few kills, get a headshot before the mag goes empty, reload hella fast, lather rinse repeat. IMO Better Devils is still the best HC out there, but this one seems like it's a decent back up if want it.

How strong are the scout rifles in general in Destiny 2? I really loved how strong their criticals were in D1, but the ones available in the betas felt like they dealt less damage than what I'm familiar with.

Personally they feel pretty strong. MIDA is still king of the Crucible, at least for the time being and Nameless Midnight can go toe to toe with it most of the time.

Overall I think they toned done the damage on a lot of weapons by a bit, but even then scouts are still probably the best choice for most PVE and PVP activities

I managed to get the Scathelocke and Skyburner's Oath from my post-story rewards, so I'm looking forward to shooting things with those.
