Virtual Private Network or VPN is used to connect to other secure sites. You would not want to use VPN to download things. Most VPNs are used to connect networks together to access and share data. They are usually really secure.
There is a lot of VPN clients out there. It all depends on the firewall on the secure side to figure out what type is used to connect.
I us VPN to connect to several clients all over the state. Just like I was sitting at the client by creating a pipe line between my home machine back to them securely. To share data and make it Encrypted.
Hope this helps.

if you are looking for just a nice working VPN. I would use torguard.net there is a no log policy, so they hold no personal info and their payment system is not connected to their username/password system for extra security and they take bitcoin.
