in my opinion the most important components for a gaming pc are the CPU and GPU.
i finished building my own new gaming pc last month.
this is what i got in mine, above my budget but will give you an idea.
case: coolermaster Cosmos 2
motherboard: msi gaming 7
cpu: i7 4790K
cpu cooler: corsair H90
gpu: msi geforce gtx 980
ram: 2x 8gb G.skill tridentX series - ddr3
psu: coolermaster silent pro 1000W
all this can be downgraded to suit your budget since this setup was around 1800 euro which is around 2400 dollars i think. i would recommend the i7 and the gtx 970 or 980. the newer games will be going to recommend something in that range.
when choosing a case make sure its big enough, the newer gpu's are pretty large with the dual fans.
let me know if you need more info

I could put together an amazon list or parts picker list for you, if you tell me what type of games you play and if you plan on streaming or have interest in putting together a high quality channel.

here ya go, it got everything beast gpu, beast processor that can stream if you want,16gb ram,240gb ssd and 2tb hdd for mass storage. both motherboard and psu can handle sli uppgrade in the future if needed. its 200$ over budget but with mail in rebate(might be irritating but worth) its "only" 100$ over budget and that is the cooler. it makes the system quiter and looks so much better + if you want to overclock there is room for that. if you want to save 40$ and/or dont like the angular elements of the chassi you can switch it out for a nzxt h440.

Check out some online PC stores. They have great deals on pre-built and do it yourself builds.

found a prebuild system for 1499,- at JW from what i can tell it seems to be good value for AU prices. you just need to change a few part for your preference.

in europe you usually dont really save money by building it yourself. just keep that in mind.
