The Need for Speed series has been nothing if not schizophrenic over the last decade. We've had Criterion delivering blisteringly fast arcade experiences, we've had more simulation-focused outings, we've even had story-driven racing, complete with characters and QTEs. Thankfully, with the creation of Ghost Games – the stewards of the Need for Speed series from here on out – and its debut title, Rivals, it finally feels like Need for Speed is headed in a more coherent direction.
Rivals is very much in the Criterion lineage of Need for Speed games: fast, pretty and socially connected, and it's little wonder. Not only does the studio boast some incredible talent, but Rivals is being developed in partnership with Criterion, and is clearly leveraging everything that the studio that Burnout built has learned over the years.
