The big-budget, high profile games you see lined up in the front window of your local game store are the public faces of our hobby. They’re impressive, they’re iconic, and recently within the enthusiast community they’re maligned for how franchise-driven, stale and lacking in innovation they’ve become.

We’re all familiar with the idea that mainstream game development has become so bloated in terms of budget that only the safest sellers survive. It’s a situation that results in many fantastic experiences, but it seems every new game is gearing up to become a franchise, and for every great new franchise that releases two tired sequels make their way to the shelves announcing the trivialisation of a series we used to think was fresh and exciting.
