Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune insists that his next game, Mighty No. 9, isn't just an attempt to bottle lightning twice. "It has that classic feel, it feels like something Inafune," he tells IGN, "but it's not a Mega Man game, for sure."
In the earliest moments of making Mighty No. 9, Inafune and his team at Comcept made sure to distance main character Beck's look from the iconic Mega Man. "Ultimately, as we started building it out, I wanted to make sure, with all the different people on the character creation team, that we didn’t feel we were tied to the Mega Man look," Inafune explains.
The Beck silhouette features similar proportions, but Inafune emphasizes the finer details. Beck's transforming arm, distinct goggles, and color scheme, for instance. "Telling the character team that they can break further away from that mold and come up with more originality helped, I think, that design become what it is today."
