Prior to sending it out to a select number of users as part of a beta, Valve has revealed the specifications of the Steam Machine prototype hardware it currently has in development.
The prototype, which will be sent out to 300 eligible Steam users later this year, is described in a new Steam Universe announcement as a "high-end, high-performance box." It's being built entirely of off-the-shelf parts, meaning those who get their hands on the hardware are free to upgrade everything inside -- from the video card and processor right down to the motherboard. Also as a result of using freely available components, people will be free to build their own equivalent Steam Machine at home, save for the enclosure the prototype comes in -- though even that will be possible to recreate, as Valve says it will be releasing the source CAD files for it.
