It's been a hell of a year to be involved in video games. Starting with the announcement of the PS4 in February, we've been carried along on a tide of next-gen rumours, announcements, face-offs and, finally, releases. Many of us will be starting 2014 with a new console under the TV. Personally I've been so involved in all of this noise about the future that I've missed out on many of the games that usually brighten up the year: the smaller games, the unexpected ones that turn up to delight you over a weekend or an evening, or the games that come out when you're deep into something else and sit neglected on the shelf until the Christmas break.
