No common thread runs through my favorite games list. Some are mysterious, some are brutally difficult, and others provided the best multiplayer memories I have. These are five games that appeal to my tastes in gameplay and story.
It’s too hard for me to write about Dark Souls without sounding like a weirdo, so I won’t even try.
Dark Souls is not flawless. The interface is vague, it has frame rate issues, and a few of its environments just aren’t smartly designed – Lost Izalith, please stand and take a bow for being one of the worst video game areas I can think of. Your bone dinosaur things and Super Bright Lava are no good.
But the rest of Dark Souls is a sublime adventure through an evil land that will eventually become your home. And by “evil,” I don’t mean jets of fire and spinning blades and creepy organ music. It simply feels like all the good has drained out of the world.
